Wednesdays are Better if you are Tiger Woods

Posted by Belushi on October 17, 2007

Most of the country wakes up with a little extra pep in their step on a Wednesday morning. They know it’s “Hump Day” and there are only two more days until the weekend. One more day until they can go out and get sloshed on Slursday (aka: Thursday) night.

Tiger Woods wakes up today, next to Elin, to the announcement that he is $100 Million dollars richer and will now have a sports drink named after him. Not a bad Hump Day for Tiger. Of course I imagine that everyday is pretty damn good for Tiger Woods.

AdAge is confirming a story that ran in the September issue of Golfweek, that Tiger Woods is now the newest spokesperson for Gatorade. Not only that, they will be partnering with Tiger for a new sports drink called Gatorade Tiger.

Gatorade Tiger

Golfweek reported that the 5 year deal could be worth as much as $100 Million dollars to El Tigre. The Gatorade Tiger drink will debut in stores next March, and be supported by a massive media blitz. It will be offered in cherry, citrus and grape flavors. Tiger said, “Gatorade has been part of my game plan for years”. By the way, why did they not call this drink Tigerade? You know that’s what people will wind up calling it anyway.

With this deal Tiger now has endorsement deals from Pepsico (Gatorade), Nike, EA Sports, Upper Deck and General Motors. It’s been widely speculated that Tiger will become (or already is possibly) the first Billion dollar athlete. Meaning, the first athlete to earn over $1 Billion dollars from salary, winnings and endorsements. I think it’s only a matter of time, the dude is rolling in the dough.

So keep an eye out for Tigerade, coming to a 7-11 near you soon. No word yet on whether it will help improve your golf game…but it should help you fist bump better on the course.

Golf Girl is still hoping Gatorade will come out with a version for Phil.

Amanda Beard New Go Daddy Girl

Posted by Belushi on October 5, 2007

Our favorite US swimming hottie, Amanda Beard, will be featured as the next “Go Daddy Girl” for GoDaddy.com’s new search engine campaign. She is the next in a long line of hot chicks that GoDaddy has used to hawk their service. Candice Michelle was the original Go Daddy Girl. Since then they’ve used Valerie Thompson (drag racer) and Danica Patrick (auto racing star).

Virgin America Brings New Meaning “In-flight Entertainment”

Posted by Belushi on August 15, 2007

August 8th was the maiden flight for Virgin America in the United States. Flights from San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York will mark the first time that Virgin Airlines offers flights within the US. So the big question now is how is Virgin America going to compete in the already crowded US airline industry?

The answer: Virgin America is going to provide luxurious features that few (Jet Blue) other US airlines offer. And they are going to offer them to all passengers, and still price their flights reasonably.

Virgin America

The key to Virgin’s in-flight experience is their entertainment system, called RED. It will allow travelers to choose between satellite television via Dish network, video games, internet access, on-board email, chat and pay per view movies. The chat feature allows users to chat between seats on the plane. RED also allows users to select from a list of thousands of MP3s on the plane to listen to music during the flight. They will also use RED to order food and then pay via credit card. Virgin also offers minibars on the plane that let people get their own drinks. And Google Maps is bundled into RED, for those that want to chart their journey. Each seat also provides 110-volt power, a USB port and Ethernet jack for all tech needs.

In first-class all of the entertainment features will be free. In economy class seats, there will be a charge for the services.

And the mood of the Virgin America planes is different. Each plane has special mood lighting, that will adjust from “dawn” to “blue sky” to “dusk” to give passengers a more relaxed feeling. And they offer fancy leather seats, that were designed by the same company (Recaro) that builds seats for Mercedes, Ferrari and Jaguar. Virgin planes even have music playing in the bathroom, to cover up the sounds of couples interested in joining the mile high club…or people who had a bad lunch.

Virgin America Cabin
A look inside the cabin of a Virgin Airlines America flight. Mood lighting gives a new experience to air travel.

So the question is when are the rest of the airlines going to be able to offer these same features? I think American, Continental, Delta and United need to step up their game to provide this level of service.

Meet the worlds richest man…

Posted by JamesBond on July 4, 2007

Bill Gates who?

Who would have guessed that the richest person in the world would hail from Mexico?

Carlos Slim, yes that’s his real name, is worth in excess of $67.8 billion.  His company, America Movil, is a juggernaut in the Mexican telecom business.  Specifically, mobile phones.

He recently moved past Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, who are ironically giving most of their money away these days.

Take that, Sony!

Posted by JamesBond on July 2, 2007

What was supposed to be a two horse race between Microsoft (X-Box 360) and Sony (Playstation 3) in the video game console market, has turned out to be an upset of monumental proportions.

Nintendo was left for dead just a few years ago, but the new Wii has been a runaway smash.  They gambled by not trying to beat Sony and Microsoft at the own game (the bigger the processor, the better the game), and won.  The interactive concept has taken game development in a whole new direction, while Microsoft and Sony will have to continue to bash each others heads in in the stale, traditional gaming market of first-person shooters and sports games that change very little from year to year.

Proof of Nintendo’s resurgence came a few weeks ago when they temporarily vaulted into the top 10 most valuable companies in Japan, pushing Sony down to number 11.  Sony was back to number 10 by the end of the day, but the message was loud and clear.

You think you have it bad at the office?

Posted by JamesBond on June 27, 2007

hitachi.jpg

Guilty.

I’ve surfed porn at work before. I’ve made numerous personal phone calls on the Boss’ tab . I’ve even made plans to hook-up with a co-worker over company email. Was I worried that someone was watching? Yeah, I guess so. Was it worth it? No question.

We’re told that our supervisors read our emails and know what websites we visit, but do we really believe they’re watching that closely? You’ll occasionally hear about someone getting fired because management read a particularly harmful email, but I think we all assume that those incidents are few and far between.

Not at Hitachi.

It seems they’ve developed a “business microscope” that monitors employees movements around the office, and measures things such as how far you stray from your workspace, and your proximity to other co-workers. “Don’t get too close, or we’ll assume your having sex!!”

The tags also include radiation sensors, sound sensors and a radio communication device.

“The system can be used to clarify the problems within an organization and, thus, reduce the risk in organizational operation, in addition to the improvement of productivity, by quantitatively showing the strength of the relationships among the members of the organization…”  Blah, blah, blah…

I guess that means I won’t be applying at Hitachi anytime soon.

You never know when you might be having one of those days where there’s no way to get around rubbing one out after the hot intern named Erin, with perfect tits and a see-through blouse, walks by your cube and wants to chat.

Not that I would know anything about that.

Starbucks Coffee Changes Their Name to Starbucks

Posted by Belushi on June 21, 2007

Starbucks Logo

No, it’s not official yet. But I figure it’s only a matter of time until Starbucks drops the word Coffee from their famous name. Why? Because Starbucks is not just a coffee company anymore. They are transforming themselves into a commodities company and a media company. And they are going way, way beyond just brewing coffee.

I recently read a great book about Starbucks, Grande Expectations. The author, Karen Blumenthal, follows Starbucks stock for a year to chronicle what makes it go up and down. In the book it details many of Starbucks latest endeavors. Most notably their burgeoning music business, which includes making first-run albums with musicians, like Paul McCartney, and selling those albums in Starbucks locations. But Starbucks is also getting into movies (Akeelah and the Bee), water (Ethos), food and consumer merchandise. Basically they are becoming a commodities company, selling anything that will drive more revenue.

So as Starbucks makes this shift in strategy into other areas, it’s only natural that they drop the word Coffee from their corporate name and logo. Because does it really make any sense to buy the latest Madonna CD from a coffee company?

And besides, Starbucks would just be following the path that certain other notable American corporations have established. Apple used to be known as Apple Computers, until they decided to start selling MP3 players and phones. And Apple’s rival Microsoft years ago was known as Microsoft Computers. But MSFT had the foresight to drop the “Computers” from their name long before they started selling game systems like Xbox. And a long, long time ago Pepsi was known as Pepsi Cola. But the softdrink giant dropped the Cola once they realized there was money to be made in clothing, burritos (Taco Bell) and fried chicken (KFC).

So the next time you walk into your neighborhood Starbucks, look around at all of the other stuff they are selling. Then you’ll realize it’s only a matter of time until they drop the coffee. And when they do, remember that you heard it here first.

starbucks_logo_new.jpg
The new Starbucks logo. It’ll probably need to be reworked, since it looks a little naked without the coffee.

Have you bought anything from Starbucks other than coffee?

Get cheaper Wi-Fi at Starbucks

Posted by Belushi on May 1, 2007

Is Starbucks getting competition for their Wi-Fi business?

Starbucks Logo

Starbucks might want to consider just sticking to coffee. Because they seem to be under attack on all other fronts. The latest front they are being attacked on is on their Starbucks Wi-Fi they offer to their clients. Starbucks partners with T-Mobile to offer access to their in-store patrons at $10.00 per day.

Now there is an upstart Spanish company named Fon, who is aggressively moving into to Starbuck’s Wi-Fi world. Fon who claims to be “the largest Wi-Fi community in the World” is big in Europe where they promote the “Fon Community”. They sell wireless routers at $39.95 each. And members that buy those routers “share” access to them with other Foneros in their community. So someone who is part of the service can logon anywhere they can find a Fonero Access Point. The idea is to build a large enough community of users so that someone who is a member will have wireless access everywhere they go. Fon has been very creative in how they have marketed their product in Europe, and because of that they have picked up a huge following in just a few years.

Now Fon has their sights set on America. And their first big foray into the US wireless marketplace was to fire a shot right across Starbuck’s bow. Their Fonbucks program is offering a free router to anyone or business that is situated right next to a Starbucks. They provide Starbuck’s neighbor the free router that has two channels - a public and private. The Starbuck’s neighbor’s public Fon channel can be bought by Starbuck’s patrons for $2.00 a day. That’s compared to the $10.00 access that the Starbuck’s T-Mobile program usually charges. Fon then splits the profits - $1.00 for each - with the neighbor of Starbuck’s who installed the Fon Wi-Fi.

Fon is aggressively marketing this program and has already provided 6800 free routers in less than a month. Their advertising has said “A savvy patron of Starbucks need only pay $2 a day for WiFi. They’d have to be a grande drip to pay the $10 Starbucks charges.”

Starbuck’s has been fairly quiet in their response to this campaign. So far only saying their program with T-Mobile provides a “dedicated data line”, as opposed to just a Wi-Fi connection. But there is specualation a deal between Fon & Starbuck’s might be in the works already. Starbuck’s contract with T-Mobile expires in 2009, and Fon has already had talks with Starbucks execs about joining forces.

And guess which companies are behind Fon? The $21 Million dollar start-up is funded by Google and Ebay’s Skype. Which once again proves the point - it’s a Google World and we’re all just living in it.

Commonly Used Business Jargon

Posted by Belushi on April 26, 2007

Commonly Used or Overused Business Euphemisms.

Have you ever gotten off a call at work and not understood what the person on the other end of the phone was saying to you? Have you ever walked through an office and overheard people talking what sounds like a foreign language?

Well you are not alone. Today it’s become more common for people to use euphemisms in the workplace. They often substitute phrases they’ve picked up into their regular business jargon (gotcha). And this practice has created an almost entirely new language that the American businessperson must keep up with today. It’s almost to the point that they need to offer college courses in Commonly Used Business Phrases and what they Actually Mean. During a meeting the other day, I had to lean over and ask the guy next to me what a certain “buzzword” in a report actually meant. It was quite emasculating. So below are some of my favorites.
