Jessica Biel in her panties…

Posted by JamesBond on March 29, 2007

There’s a new Adam Sandler/Kevin James movie coming out this summer, and it looks like it’s going to be pretty funny. They play completely straight guys, who have to fake getting married/being gay, so that they can receive pension and benefits from their firefighting jobs. Evidently single guys don’t get benefits.

Anyways, the most important part is that Jessica Biel enters the picture as their case worker and Adam Sandler starts to fall in love with her, although he has to keep her convinced that he’s gay. As you might expect she totally lets her guard down, thinking he’s gay, and starts to treat him like he’s one of the girls. Watch the trailer at the link…

Which Affiliate company is the best?

Posted by Belushi on March 28, 2007

So your business is in need of a boost in traffic. A common remedy for that is to pair yourself with an Affiliate company (aka: Internet Marketing) who will build a program for you. These companies have large networks of affiliates who will sign up to sell your product/service, for a price. Typically you pay the affiliates a % of every sale they generate. But there are a myriad of ways you can pay them, and your Affiliate Marketing company can present that to you.

The upside of working with an Affiliate company is that they will bring you a lot of affiliates from their established networks. These affiliates will work on your companies behalf, to push sales to your site.

The downside of the Affiliate networks is there is no guarantee that they will bring you affiliates or sales. Also, there is no SEO benefit from the affiliates they do obtain for you. Because unfortunately these sites were developed, years ago, focused on generating traffic and revenue. But none have yet to morph to the new way of the internet, which is everyone needs great SEO to compete. And the biggest component of SEO is having a lot of inbound links (i.e.- backlinks) pointing to your web site. So these networks filter all of the traffic from the affiliates they sign up for you through their site. They say they do this for accurate “tracking” purposes, but the reality is they just have not adjusted their models to what would be most useful today.

For that reason, I highly suggest that any web site that needs an affliate program should definitely have their own “home grown” program as well. A program where you can setup affiliates on your own and get them linking directly to your site.

But if you do decide to outsource. How do you decide which Affiliate Marketing company to use?

The big players in this space are Commission Junction (commonly known as CJ.com), Linkshare and Performics (which is under the DoubleClick umbrella). Here’s a breakdown of each:

1. Linkshare - Probably the top recommended solution. But also the most expensive of the 3 companies. Linkshare has the most name brand internet sites (Cingular, JCrew, Match.com, Netflix, Orbitz & Wal Mart) using their service. So that right away tells you they are doing something right. But their real value is that they will let “own” the affiliates you sign up through their network. Meaning, they reveal the names of the affiliates and their contact information. And they don’t prohibit you from working with those affiliates, if you ever leave Linkshare. The other guys hide the pertinent information about which affiliates are pointing to you, and restrict you from working with “their” affiliates for 6 months after the engagement ends. So this is the biggest benefit of working with Linkshare, that when you are ready to part from them - you can take your best performing affiliates with you. Personally, I think that shows that they are confident enough in their services that you won’t want to leave.

The downside of Linkshare is their cost. They charge (all figures are approximate) $5000 upfront. Then they charge a $4000-$6000 per month fee, if you use their “managed services”. Their managed services basically mean that you have a dedicated account representative who does all of the work setting up and maintaining your affiliate program. They do offer a non-managed service for around $1000 per month. In either deal they also take 3% in commission from each sale they generate for you. So you are paying a big upfront fee, a high monthly fee AND a commission on each sale they generate for you. It’s a lot of dough, so make sure you really do need the kind of value they provide.

Linkshare has been around since 1996. And they’ve got offices in the USA, Canada, UK and Japan.

2. Commission Junction - They are a close 2nd to Linkshare. But they mask affiliate info from you, and restrict you from partnering with affiliates on their network after you leave CJ. They also charge A LOT higher commission on sales than the other two. CJ takes 30% of the total sale. So if you agree to pay one of their affiliates 10% of any sale they bring to you. And said affiliate makes you a $100.00 sale. You’ve got to pay that affiliate $10.00 and then pay CJ $3.00. So it’s a pricey commission. They do have the lowest upfront fee ($2250). And their managed fee is $5000 per month. Although they push their non-managed service, which is free, very hard. Both other companies charge for their non-managed service.

CJ boasts a client list that includes Adobe, Ebay, LendingTree and Staples. They’ve been around since 1998. They have offices in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia.

3. Performics - They are good company and offered as part of the DoubleClick suite of services. But their network of affiliates is significantly smaller than the other two companies. Their affiliates are mostly geared towards retail sites. They are also pretty cloak and dagger about their product offerings. Meaning, you can’t get all the details of what they can provide unless you sign an NDA with them. How’s that for a service company?

Performics charges $2500 upfront. And they take 1/3, on top of, whatever amount you are paying their affiliate. But their monthly charge of $2500 is a minimum. Which is unlike the other two, that charge flat fees for their service.

The boast a client list that includes Barnes & Nobles and Circuit City.

There are some other small players (LeadPile, AffiliatePrograms.com, RevenueLoop) in this space, but none that I’ve found to have any advantages over the big 3.

So when you get ready to make the plunge and sign on an Affiliate Marketing Company to aide your business. You should definitely talk to the big 3 above. Although make sure you do invest in your own Affiliate Program before spending the money to outsource. Doing both is fine, but only outsourcing will never get you fully in the internet game.

[Update to this post: Since I wrote this I discovered a new company called Kowabunga which I believe to be the best affiliate marketing company. The reason? Simple, they are able to provide you with direct links to your site, unlike the other 3 guys above. This added feature gives you an important SEO benefit that is so worth having. Kowabunga is a bit pricey at $5K per month for their full managed service. And their network is smaller than the other players above. But I believe they might be the best company IF you are looking for revenue stream and natural SEO assistance.]

Tiger Woods Nike Golf Shoes

Posted by Belushi on March 28, 2007

Nike Golf just announced the release of the Tiger Woods Limited Edition footwear. The shoes are to commemorate the last 10 years, since his 1st Master’s victory, of Tiger’s dominance of pro golf.

TigerWoodsNikes

The line will have 4 styles, one for each of the golf majors (Masters, US Open, British Open & PGA Championship). The shoes will be available at retail stores for around $220.00 per pair. That’s more expensive than Air Jordans, or any other Nike’s on the market.

This just in…Tiger Woods is a very rich man.

Oh, and every night he gets to go home to this:
ElinNordegren
His wife Elin Nordegren.

Oh, and Elin has a hot twin sister:

Life is good for Tiger Woods.

Pro Athletes + Strip Clubs = Trouble

Posted by Belushi on March 27, 2007

NBA player, Zach Randolph, was granted “bereavement leave” from his team, the Portland Trailblazers, when he learned of the murder of his girlfriend’s cousin. The next night while the Blazers were playing a home game (the game he was excused from), he was spotted at a local strip club.

Randolph told a club official that it was just a brief stop there while he was on his way to the airport to catch a red-eye flight. The problem with that story is there was no flight out that night at the time he was at the strip club. So he lied to his team.

Read the whole story in the Portland Tribune.

Btw- the best part of that column is the reference to Derek Anderson’s escapades in 2005:
“Blazer guard Derek Anderson was spotted going through a drive-through window at McDonald’s while his team was playing a game at the Rose Garden.” Um, yes…I’d like a Quarter Pounder with cheese and make it fast because I’ve got to get back for the 4th Quarter.

Fixing the NFL

Posted by Belushi on March 26, 2007

Herm Edwards gets it. From Peter King’s Monday Morning QB column on CNNSI:

Edwards said to him (NFL Commish Roger Goodell): “Kick ‘em out.” Goodell smiled, knowing exactly what Edwards was talking about. The coach, like so many of his peers, wants the rookie commissioner to make a veteran decision and take a hard line with the repeat offenders who’ve given the NFL such a black eye in the past year. “Everybody’s behind you,” Edwards said, not pausing his pedaling as Goodell listened. “If you need anyone to speak up on this, you can count on me. But we’ve got to get the game back to being the number one thing. Too many of these guys are abusing the privilege of playing in the league. And when you fine ‘em, the fines mean nothing. You’ve got to take the game away from ‘em.”

The NFL has a problem. Players like Pacman Jones (Titans), Chris Henry (Bengals), Tank Johnson (Bears) and Leonard Little (Rams) get in trouble, many of them more than once, and the NFL does little to stop it. It’s the same problem that exists in all U.S. pro sports, but the NFL is far and away the biggest of these leagues. So if the NFL decides to do something aggressive to deal with these issues, then it’s possible the other leagues will eventually follow suit.

That’s why it’s so great to see a respected coach like the Kansas City Chief’s, Herm Edwards, step up and support the league on this issue. Edwards solution is simple; kick them out when they do wrong. He’s also quick to point out that everyone deserves one ’second chance’, but if that person gets in trouble again they’ve got no more ‘get out of jail free’ cards.

Why is this such a big issue for the NFL to deal with? Because the NFL’s image is continuing to be tarnished by the same set of offenders. And when the leaguewide image is hurt, it’s affecting the players who are staying out of trouble as well. So it’s time for the NFL to step up and do something serious, before things get worse. NFL player’s transgressions have already been directly responsible for the death of innocent people (see Leonard Little below), and that doesn’t ever need to happen again.

From Wikipedia on Leonard Little:
After a drunken birthday in 1998, NFL star Leonard Little crashed into and killed another motorist, Susan Gutweiler. When tested, his blood alcohol level measured 0.19 percent. Little received 90 days, four years’ probation and 1000 hours of community service. Six years later, after the involuntary manslaughter conviction was wiped from his record, Little was again arrested for drunk driving and speeding. Little was acquitted of those subsequent charges on a technicality.”

Btw- This is the same league that DOES HAVE penalties for “excessive celebration” on the field, but very few concrete measures in place to effectively deal with player’s mistakes off the field.

Stuff I want…

Posted by Coach on March 25, 2007

I want the camera angle to not change when a player is about to dunk.

I want golf announcers to go more than three minutes during a match play tournament without saying:  “That’s the nature of match play.”

I want the PGA Tour to have a mandatory weight lifting competition just so I can put money on Davis Love finishing last.

I want one more truly great player to play four years of college basketball.

I want Ken Venturi to commentate my life for one day.

I want proof that Dan Hicks isn’t a failed attempt at cloning Jim Nantz.

I want Jim Nantz to shave that awful head of hair.  Hey Jimmy, you’re bald.  You’ve been bald for a long time.

I want Billy Packer to understand that the game he’s calling isn’t about him.

I want proof that John Madden’s father wasn’t a hobgoblin.

I want sportswriters to write what they believe and to not be intentionally sensationalistic simply to elicit a reaction from readers.  I’m looking at you, Skip Bayless.

I want reporters to boycott T.O.’s locker.

I want the NBA to be good again.

I want people to understand that Tiger Woods is better than Jack Nicklaus and it’s not even close.

I want Bobby Knight to understand screaming in kid’s faces might not be a good thing – or even necessary.

I want Kevin Durant to make the NBA good again.

I want Bill Parcells to wear his pants either over or under his gut because the equator look is the worst of the three options.

I want Mark Cuban to sit down.  We see you there.  It’s okay.

I want proof that Greg Oden isn’t Freddy Adu’s dad.

I want Mickelson and Tiger in the final group Sunday at
Augusta.

How many cups of beer in a keg?

Posted by Belushi on March 24, 2007

The age old question that ever high school and college student should commit to memory. How many cups of beer come from a keg?

First you’ve got to establish whether you are talking about Domestic Beer or Imported Beer.
A standard keg of domestic beer holds approximately 15.5 gallons. A keg of imported beer is going to be closer to 13.2 gallons.

Second, there are 128 fluid ounces in a gallon.

Assuming you are using 12 ounce cups. The number of cups of beer in a keg:
* There are 165 cups of beer in a domestic keg.
* There are 140 cups of beer in a imported keg.

Other keg facts:
* There are approximately 16K calories in a keg of Miller Lite. Bud Light & Coors Light are slightly higher.
* There are approximately 24K calories in a keg of Rolling Rock.
* It takes almost 7 cases (24 count) of beer to equal the amount of beer in 1 keg.
* A keg of domestic beer weighs approximately 160 lbs.
* Kegs should be kept at temperatures of 35-40 degrees to stay fresh.
* If stored at the proper temperature, an average keg will last 30-60 days without losing any of it’s taste.

Why does my keg beer have too much foam?
1. The beer is not cold enough.
2. The pressure in the tap is off (aka: a broken tap).
3. The line of the tap is dirty.

SNL Lazy Sunday: The Chronicles of Narnia Rap

Posted by Belushi on March 24, 2007

An oldie, but still a goodie. Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell knock it out of the park during this rap on Saturday Night Live. If you haven’t ever seen this, you should.

Go to this link to play the video: SNL Lazy Sunday: The Chronicles of Narnia Rap:

Lyrics to Chronicles of Narnia
Lazy Sunday, wake up in the late afternoon.
Call Parnell just to see how he’s doin’.
Hello?
What up, Parns?
Yo Samberg, what’s crackin’?
You thinking what I’m thinkin?
NARNIA.
Man, it’s happenin’.
But first my hunger pains are stickin’ like duct tape.
Let’s hit up Magnolia and mack on some cupcakes.
No doubt that bakery’s got all da bomb frostins.
I love those cupcakes like McAdams loves Gosling.
Two, no six, no twelve, BAKERS DOZEN.
I told you that I’m crazy for these cupcakes, cousin.
Yo, where’s the movie playin’?
Upper west side, dude.
Well, let’s hit up Yahoo Maps to find the dopest route.
I prefer Map Quest.
That’s a good one, too.
Google Maps is the best.
True that.
DOUBLE TRUE.
68th and Broadway.
Step on it, sucka.
What you wanna do, Chris?
SNACK ATTACK, MOTHER******
It’s the Chronic (what?)
Cles of Narnia
Yes, the Chronic (what?)
Cles of Narnia
We love that Chronic (what?)
Cles of Narnia
Pass that Chronic (what?)
Cles of Narnia
Yo, stop at the deli.
The theater’s over-priced.
You’ve got the backpack?
Gonna pack it up nice.
Don’t want security to get suspicious.
Mr. Pibb and Red Vines equals CRAZY DELICIOUS!
I’ll reach in my pocket, pull out some dough.
Girl actin’ like she never seen a $10 before.
It’s all about the Hamiltons, baby.
Throw the snacks in a bag and I’m ghost like Swayze.
Roll up to the theater.
Ticket buying, what we’re handlin’.
You can call us Aaron Burr.
From the way we’re droppin’ Hamiltons.
Now parked in our seats.
Movie trivias the illest.
Which Friends alum starred in films with Bruce Willis?
We answered so fast it was scary.
Everyone stared in awe when we screamed Matthew Perry.
Now quiet in the theater or it’s gonna get tragic.
We’re bout to get taken to a dream world of magic with…
the Chronic (what?)
Cles of Narnia
Yes, the Chronic (what?)
Cles of Narnia
We love that Chronic (what?)
Cles of Narnia
Pass that Chronic (what?)
Cles of Narnia
